Throwing light on your future

A person coming to the lighthouse will be offered accommodation in a place of human warmth and safety, in which they have a sense of ownership and belonging.

Who is it for?

  • Young men and women between 16 and 25 years with a local connection to Thanet, who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and need a secure home from which to plan and actively relaunch their lives.

Who is it not for?

  • People with pets
  • People who just want accommodation
  • People who are currently using class A Drugs or seriously misusing alcohol.
  • People with unaddressed mental health needs.
  • People who want to live with their children.

The Lighthouse will offer opportunities, for young men and women to learn how to live useful independent lives.
These will include:
  • Basic Life and Social Skills
  • Looking after Yourself
  • Raising Self-Esteem
  • Job Skills
  • Tenancy Sustainment
  • Personal Motivation
  • Help in establishing Personal Safety
  • Assistance in Managing Benefit Claims
  • Liaison with Probation and YOS
  • Assistance towards permanent Housing
  • Planning for the future
  • Help in gaining access to other services
  • Encouragement in Leisure Activities
  • Support for Substance misuse issues, in a non-drink/drugs environment.
Every Person coming to the Lighthouse has a personal key worker, who facilitates the Support Plan agreed with each individual.

The Support Programme

In coming to the Lighthouse, you will be offered a three stage programme, tailored to your own needs.

Stage One: Induction
  • You will be given help and time to settle in.
  • You will be informed of house rules and health and safety aspects of the building.
  • You will register with a local Doctor and seek other health requirements, if necessary (Dentist, Opticians and so on).
  • Assistance will be given to complete housing benefit and other claims. (Formal proof of identity is required for this).
  • You will be helped with budgeting and shopping.
  • With your key worker, you will develop a Support Plan, which is personal to you and reflects your hopes for the future.
Stage Two: Building on your Skills
  • You will identify those aspects of your life which require additional work and support.
  • You will be assisted to apply for and attend education and/or Training courses available locally.
  • You may enrol with any other service which meets your needs and will enhance your future.
Stage Three: Support whilst you Test your Skills
  • You many attend full or part-time work and/or training opportunities.
  • You will prepare for independent living and permanent housing.
